Next Tuesday, July 4th, we have no class...well, some of us never have any class...ahahahahahah....I know, I'm a laugh a minute...this play on words with the idea of "NO CLASS" meaning different things is a good way to slide into fallacies, found in Chapter 17. Slippery meanings in language can be a sneaky way to persuade an audience instead of using real evidence...If you plan to go on to take Coms 311, Argumentation, you will get into much more detail on these fallacies...they have to do with reasoning...for this blog,
1.) I will give the first example, (see above).
2.) The next person to post has to say what fallacy I used and then make up an example of a different fallacy, trying to stump the following person to post, etc...
3.) You must blog again to respond to the person that guessed your fallacy, tell them if they were right or wrong and what the correct answer was.
I will discuss this "no class" example of a fallacy I used in this blog above during class tonight, since not all the fallacies of reasoning are found in our book...Other popular fallacies include, (as seen on p 389-401) Bandwagon Appeals, Overly-Emotional Appeals, Non-sequitors, appeals to misplaced authority, ad hominem, Red Herring and Causal Fallacies...Fallacies as defined in the book are: "False reasonaing when some one attempts to persuade without adequate evidence or with arguments that are irrelevent and inappropriate" (Beebe & Beebe, p. 390). Happy Fourth and have a great day off next Tuesday!!!!--Sandra

Sandra,I'm not exactly sure, but I think that you used a Hasty Generalization falacy.
Ok, here's my falacy:
Senator Nate Mitchell should not be reelected; one of his assistants was caught doing drugs and giving lap dances in the back of a van in front of the State Capital. :) (sorry Nate, but don’t worry, I will still f–king vote for you) :P
Nora Jordan
Ok now's my turn finally:) to Nora --> I'm not sure if that is what you made.. I mean the fallacy... but I understood it as a "Non Sequitur" Is that right?? 'coz I don't think there is a connection between voting for Senator Nate Mitchell and the way that one of his assistants did outside their jobs...
Now, for my fallacy:
Procrastinators especially on students tend to put the average % of GPA down yearly...
Either we start pushing "them" hard to pursue on quality studying or it's "down-the-drain" for our reputation in education..
:)DaNi D.
Hi Dani,
No, the fallacy I chose was an ethical fallacy "Guilt by Association."
Nora Jordan
Dani, I think your fallacy is "either-or-fallacy"...because you're arguing two approaches to the problem (it's either this or that will happen); and ignoring other solutions.
Good one!!!
Here is mine...
I am always in the look of watching what my family and I eat to have a healthy life. Nevertheless the majority of the people know that the less heavy one is, the healthier.
***Zuli Ramos***
Are you sure Nate's wasn't the Ah Hominem Fallacy? Is that the same as guilt by association, I had not heard of that title...SHOW OFFS!!!!!
Uhh, my first example was called the EQUIVOCATION fallacy, a language fallacy when slippery definitions allow the persuader to be ambiguous on purpose...not in the book, but a clever fallacy to have in your backpocket--Another example of equivocation is: Ebony gives me her paper she wrote on "Abstract Mathematical Equations" and I happen to hate math (hypothetically) So...I roll my eyes and say "Thnaks Ebony, I shall lose no time in reading this!" (My statement could mean, I'll get right to it OR I won't waste my time...) That's EQUIVOCATION, it leaves me a loophole to get around the idea of "lying" because the word can mean almost opposite things...Sounds like a good tool for SOME politicians, huh??? I should now guess Zuli's fallacy, but I don't want to rop the next curious student of their opportunity, so re-read the previous blog and take a stab at Zuli's fallacy...But Zuli, you may want to re-word your example, it is kind of confusing, can you give a more clear example of the fallacy you want us to identify?
Smiles--Sandra the Blogging Oprah
I pulled the "Guilt By Association" from my English class text. The books says that Guilt By Association attacks someone's credibility by linking that person with a person or an activty the audience considers bad, suspicious, or untrustworthy. The book states that, Ad Hominem charges, directly attack someone's character rather than focusing on the issue at hand. They suggest that because something is wrong with this person whatever he or she says must also be wrong.
What I was trying to do with my falacy was to say that Nate has nothing to do with his assistants behavior, but his character was still being questioned because of it.
Nora Jordan
thanks Nora.... I got your answer and you explained it to me on the phone a while ago..:P anyways, fallacies make me confused but I'm willing to learn it from Sandra....:) Miss Oprah!!! wuuuhooo!!!!:)
to Zuli---> good job gurl!!! you got me there... and you even gave me an explanation....yup, it's either-or fallacy....
again to those who haven't look at the blog assignment: "Happi Bloggin'!!":)
DaNi D.
I'm not sure if i'm doing this right, but i'll try. I think Zuli's fallacy is hasty generalization because you are making a generalization that every small person is the healthiest person. Or it could be bandwagon fallacy because you are saying everyone that is the less heavy one is the healthiest.
Now here is mine: Everybody knows that myspace.com is the best way to communicate to all your friends and family.
~Andrea Jouganatos~
i guess that andrea's is bandwagon fallacy because shes saying everyone knows about myspace and its good way of communticating, thats what she's saying . but it doesn't mean you have to believe it. here's mine: the perfume curious is the best perfume because britney spears endorses it and created it..
~~janna~~
I think that Janna's is the bandwagon fallacy because she's saying that since Britney endorses the purfume that it's the best one.
Here's mine- As long as you present your speeches to the class, you'll get an A.
Sorry, I keep forgetting to post my name on these blogs. It must be the late nights.

Bin,
I believe that your fallacy is “Hasty Generalization” because you reached a conclusion from too little evidence.
Here's mine: If we have stricter gun control laws, crime will decrease in this country.

August-
Good one...I believe that your fallacy is one of hasty generalization. Yes?
Here goes mine...High School students should not have to take the exit exam because they take too many tests already.
To whoever answered mine:
I was thinking Causal Fallacy, but it seems like it could be a Hasty Generalization. I really don’t like to judge people, so whatever you think is right.
August
Sorry, August, I forgot to sign my name. I did the High School exit exam one.
Danny Paterson

In coaching football, my fiance believes his coaching techniques are second to none. If the players don't listen to him, then they can go home because they will not have a change to win. It is either his way or the highway. And not highway 99 either.
The legendary bag lady
Ro, is yours either or fallacy?
You better say yes, or I will not gossip with you anymore.
ebony
This is Daniel Serrano I don't know who the person above is, but I think it is a Red Herring fallacy.
Here's mine: We have a bunch of idiots in our class because look at the guy in the second row, Daniel, to start off with. He was named idiot of the class of '05 at Elk Grove High School.
Might be a hasty generalization. Perhaps an ad hominem. Guilty by association?
Mine:
Vote for me, because my opponent is a blithering idiot who has been known to have sexual intercourse with animals.
-Nate Mitchell
yes ebony, and since you got it right you owe me a ham snadwich hold the mayo and pickles
sorry jenn it was a hasty generalization
cabel
Hmmm. Oops. Ok. Thanks Cabel.
And Ro. You're right. :)
♥ Jenn
From Ebony
Mine was the either or fallacy..
Either it is his way or no way!!!
Ro, I will bring you the best ham sandwich ever...no pickles... or better yet how about my famous tri-tip sandwich, baked beans and potatoe salad? Yeah, thought so...
