Final Blog of the Summer!!!!

Part One: Ok, please post what you thought of the Pirates film and a tenative topic proposition (thesis with the word should in it) you and your partner plan to hotly contest and rigorously debate Tuesday. Try not to duplicate topics. NOTE: Humorous, obscure, feminist, cultural and otherwise unusual critical angles on minor aspects of the film that caught your attention are strongly encouraged...

Sandra's rule for life: Don't go for the obvious, its boring, predictable and easier for the teacher to grade you harshly on. The freaky stuff shakes people up and gets 'em thinking. Confuse authority, perplex people, take them off gaurd...But don't leave out transitions!!!!!!

Part Two of this Blog:Offer some input for a couple of your classmates to help them with their ideas.

SO--Two seperate postings required by each student, one with your own idea and opinion on the film, one offering feedback to others. Additional helping hands will earn extra credit. Finally, I have so enjoyed you all -- Thanks for being the best Public Speaking Team I have ever worked with and truly, thanks so much for the shower, and that lovely memory book you all wrote messages in for me! WOW! --what a special, rare treat! That meant so much to me! Please keep in touch through email and have terrific, speech-free rest of the summer. Blog On--AArrggghhhh!!!!!!

I absolutely loved the first Pirates movie. I bought it the first day it came out on DVD and saw it in the theature twice. I watch it all of the time still. Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed in the second film. It was really long and complicated. By the end of the movie, I understood the plot, but it was too much information to swallow. I did find it enjoyable though, it still maintained the Disney charm as well as the patented Jack Sparrow cooky behavior. Watching Johnny Depp can never be bad, even if he does have rotten teeth-he's still hot!! Chester and I will be debating on whether or not Piracy should be romaticized in films or seen for what it really is. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Janna, that is a really good idea, especially coming from two different female perspectives. I think that women using seduction to get what the want has been going on since the begining of time. It seems like you will have endless amounts of information to support both sides of your points. It would be very interesting if you guys could relate it to historical situations throughout different time periods. You are bound to open some guys eyes to what we really do!! I don't know if that's a good or bad thing, but it should be fun!

yo yo yo--I'm gonna do my speech on the portrayal of fruit in the film and how it was deeply symbolic of the relationship between Orlando and Johnny's characters...Especially the pomegranites...Oh, I also want to debate about scurvy and why it was not addressed in the film...didn't all pirates get scurvy or is that a myth?

Anonymous said...

ur topic is really good also..maybe u can do some information about how it relates to the italian mob..people romatice about that 2...but its really a dirty and bad business..like the godfather movies if you've seen those..damn is al pacino fine as hell and with that cute italian gurl that ends up dying...i mean i kno sum people romatice about that 2 bout how the mob is pretty intresting and cool..but its way illegal..thx for the feedback.

I enjoyed parts of the movie and others not so much! I loved the first one and liked the second one. Cabel and I will be doing our speech as a defense attorney and a prosecutor trying Jack Sparrow and the audience will be the jury! Tune in for the TRIAL OF THE SUMMER! haha I think Stefanie and Janna have great ideas and I will give you girls some ideas after I think of some.

WE CAN USE ANY IDEAS ANYONE HAS AS WELL!!

Helo!
This is Stephanie S. and I thought the movie was funny at times and other times it seemed to drag on. I never saw the first one, so I have nothing to compare it to. In addition, it sorta made it a little harder to figure out the ending. Well August and I are going to do our topic on Cannibalism. Pleasant topic, huh:)
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, as I will do the same.

Anonymous said...

I think that your topic Janna will be interesting to hear. August and I had discussed possibly doing the same topic prior to our cannibalism. It is definetly true how woman get what they want by seduction.
I also look forward to hearing the Trial of the Summer from you Brandy and Cabel. What exactly is the trial regarding? Jack Sparrows is a crooked pirate, isn't he. :)

This was my first Pirates of the Caribbean experience. I thought the movie was humorous, but at times I felt it was dragging and unrealistic. However, Johnny Depp was great. After seeing the movie I understood the reason for our last blog assignment.

I think there may be a conflict with speech topics because Zuli and I are also doing our speech on Hollywood romanticizing crime. We're using the angle of the Pirates and also the Sopranos and characters from Soap Operas.

Hello Stephanie S. and August,

Very interesting topic. :) :) Anyway, I guess my feedback would be to mention if it's ok to revert to cannibalism if you were stranded for food and had nothing else to eat. Like that story on the plane that crashed, (I can't remember the flight) and the people ended up having to eat those that perished in order to survive. Or maybe points from Silence of the Lambs?

The film...WOW, I think it was an explosive, romantic, persuasive, comic, and moreover a fast-forward action movie. But what I really enjoyed the most was the looney character that Johnny Depp played and how he really persuaded the others to accomplish his goals. Overall it was a really enjoyable movie eventhough, in my case, I really had to be focused on the wording and also be watching and hearing every single detail of the movie; other than that it was fun watching it.
As Nora mentioned, we were planning to give our speech about Hollywood's romatizism. So we may have a conflict with Chester's; Perhaps one of us have to change topics; but we'll see what Sandra says.
Maybe some of you have other ideas on what we should change it to. Any help it's appreciated.

I'm also looking forward to hear August and Steph's speech about Cannibalism. To bad I don't have any recipes of that matter; but I think it'll be interesting if you compare how they (Cannibals) too, sometimes had to smoke/grill their prey...that reminds me of "Carne asada"..LOL... which is about the same, since we both (Cannibals and normal people) are carnivorous; we eat dead animals; sorry that souds nasty, but it's real.
Anyway I really enjoyed going to the movies with all of you.
Have a wonderful rest of the summer:) K.I.T :)

Chester, Zuli, etc: The topics are fine, just try and touch base to make sure you cover different main points and be as unique as possible with arguments and evidence, creativity will keep the speeches unique and help avoid too much repetition...On eo f you, (Chester's group more likely) should cover ethnic stereotypes of pirates is at all possible, that would be an interesting point with humorous potential too. Email each other your outlines! Arrrrr!!!Sandra

To all-
Wow there are some interesting and unusual topics. Cannibalism?...Yum! Before checking the Blog, I suggested to Bin that our topic could be whether it was a good ending or not. (The ending is confusing for someone who hasn't seen the first episode.) Any suggestions on sprucing that topic up a bit? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Chester, and Stephanie can you e-mail me at norafaith@yahoo.com, so we can discuss our speeches. Thanks. I have my outline complete, but I need to see if I need to tweak it in any way. :)

wassup! Well I loved the movie, it was great. The ending kind of was consfusing if people didn't sse the first pirates movie. But overall it had a good plot, adventure, and it was funny. Janna and me are doing our speech on should women seduce men to get what they want or not. Of course I'm doing the not. lol Women should not use their sexual seducing powers to get what they want from people.

Everyones ideas sounds really good. The romantizing of pirates and like italian mafia is good. Cause I even think people in the mob are sexy but there bad people though, but they are exciting lol. Also the cannbalism idea is good too, you can talk about how they made the canniabals in the movie really stupid, but how can cannibals be stupid they hunt humans. You got to have smarts and good hunting skills to catch a human. Anywayz good luck everybody and thanx for the feedback.

Also some points on the movie having a good ending or not is that if u hadn't seen the first flim you would have not understood the ending. because the man at the end of the flim with the monkey at the voodoo womans house was the villian from the first pirates movie. Also the fact that they made it so the audience has to wait for the third movie to come out sux. also you know that the movie is about to make hella money again cause they have an audience that wants to see what happens next. they left us with suspense. Also did Jack die or wut? or is he at davey jones locker or wutever? Also after orlando saw kiera kiss jonny depp are they still together? or are they never going to get married? and does kiera and jack sparrow get together? alot of unaswered questions. Just throwing some ideas out there.

I thought the movie was really good.I did not see the first Pirates movie, but now I want to see it because the second one was amazing. The movie had a great plot and it was funny.I believe it kept the audience's interest. Well Jelena and I decided to do our speech on whether it is ok for women to lead men on and trap them or not.

Andrea I think your topic is excellent and I think it is similar to my and Jelena. It is def going to something important to discuss. It def caught my attention when I saw the movie. Some advice whould be to talk about how it is not right to hurt others feelings and we need to put a stop to it. Hope that helps Rocio

The speech about the fruit being used to compare the realtionship between Jack Sparrow and Will Turner sounds really interesting. I didn;t even pick up on that in the film, but I do remenber something about apples being significant in the first movie. That's why, when Captain Barbosa-the capatin of the black pearl in the first film-bit into an apple when he came the stairs at the very end of the second movie. You have shed some light onto an aspect of the movie I never noticed!

Awesome discussion here, you guys! Remember tomorrow to argue good and hard with each other--Persuasion requires real "clash" between sides! Good luck and "Thar she blows!!!!!!!!" Have a great summer Pirates!!!!--Sandra

I wasnt a big fan of this film.

It was flashy, sure. I thought it was cool at times, yes. But I found myself bored and not entertained for the vast majority of the film. It was a ridiculous sequel.

Being that my opinion of the film is almost entirely contrary to what everyone else thinks, I'll tone down my debate.

Miss Sathe and I will most likely be doing our speech on whether or not Jack Sparrow and Will Turner are heroic characters.

Andrea and Janna, I like your topic. Seduction is very powerful, however, you have to have the gift of seduction in order to pull it off. :)

Hi Danny and Bin,

I didn't see the first movie, therefore the ending of the sequel was confusing for me too. However, maybe you can argue that Disney did that on purpose in order to get those that didn't see the first movie to rush out to watch the first movie. Also, it left things in suspense for the third movie.

Hi, I really liked the movie, I thought it was really entertaining, but when I think about Disney movies most of us think about something more childish and don't expect harsh themes such as Pirates or bad habbits such as drinking and smoking portrayed by the characters. So our topic is: Negative themes and bad habbits usage in disney films. And our thesis is: "Disney should not use negative themes or bad habbits in thier movies because they may negatively influence young viewers"

Rocio... your topic of women leading men and trapping them is very interesting, Controversial issues that involve men vs. women arguements are very interesting so I'm pretty sure taht you guys will keep us awake and interested.

Like Brandy said were going to do our speech in a court room setting, with jack sparrow on trail. If any one has ideas it will help out a lot. The movie seemed to be all over the place, jumping from one story to another. Like it was trying to include everything in 2 hours. I wanted to see it again to see if I could get any thing out of it buts its not worth 9 bucks. oh and then Ro this movie i didnt see any black pirats but in the last one they had like 3 or 4, you could use something from both movies. good luck

Who ever is going to do their speech on portrayal of fruit and symbolism, I like your subject. You might have to do lots of research, but I think it will be good. We’ll see it tonight, good luck
Cabel

And the last blog is mine as well

Danny your right the ending was weird you could talk about the guy in the very end that walked down the stairs. He died in the last movie so we don’t really know where he came from or how he lived.

I agree with you Nate, the movie was boring and rediculous. I was hungry (imagined for 3 hours)and had headache afterwards. Anyway, all of us have an exciting debate to show tonight. Particularly, the how women seduce by Janna and Andrea. Rocio's topic about women trapping men. Maybe I can learn something out of it.

After seeing movie last Thursday, I lost my way and driving around for almost 3o minutes and then melting into Highway 90 eventurally. To be honest, I don't fully understand what is the plot of the movie of Dead Man's Chest neither because I've never seen the 1st. Anyway, Danny and I are going to debate whether there is a good ending or not. Let's wait to see it! Please bear with me if you are not stisfied with the information that we provide. Thank you!

well, actually i didn't watched the first one so i can't really compare them...but i had some idea on how the first one went 'coz my cousin had watched it and told me the story a bit. i liked the movie and how they manage to put everything together. i like the funny scenes and how Jack Sparrow used humor on all his dialogs..nyways, me and Sean decided on talking about the "Cracken" in the movie..lol i don't know, he said it'll be fun so i'll go with it anyway... Specifically, we will argue on whether we should/should not believe on myths like the cracken in the movie... so, just enjoy....

To Danny and Bin:

i'm interested in your topic whether the ending is good or unfinished... because after watching the movie, i also find the ending very ---(i don't know the word-- attention getter??) 'coz it can be a good ending because it'll be rooting your mind on watching the third movie but like for me, it SUCKS!!! lol 'coz i still don't accept the fact that the film ended that way... anyways, good luck on the topic, i'll listen for both sides.. hehehe

I thought the movie was excellent because it showed a side of pirates that are rarely seen. A heartfelt side.
Johnny and Orlando, they are hot, but my boo is hotter. I think Jerry should have called him to play the part of Captain Jack Sparrow.
I also like Captain Davey Jones and his dreadlock snake hairdo...the only black person in the movie.
Yeah, what about that? Doesn't Disney know that there were black pirates as well? If you are going to portray a movie about pirates, portray all nationalities involved!!!

I plan to exaggerate like the movie. I wanted to do a flip and act crazy like johnny, but I'm to old for that besides I might hurt my self. I really like the idea of eating people, that was crazy. This movie was real animated. Cabel and brandy's idea sounds great, I can't wait. I hope everyone takes this class out with a bang

Anonymous said...

sorry forgot to leave my name. Its ro

Anonymous said...

Ro hated the movie because she thought more black people should have been in it and she thought it was to animated. I strongly disagree with the animated part. She doesn't know because she was drunk when she saw the movie. My other friends, I wont mention them by name, the sexual couple in the class, also did not like it. They thought it was boring and dumb. How would they know? Even though i was not there at the movies, I am sure all they did was kiss and scratch. Look at the environment they had. Cushion and darkness. As for Ro, Vodka and Cranberry juice was her main topic of concern. Everybody pray for me because I am surrounded by nemphomaniacs and a drunk.

i thought the movie was pretty good. great effects and script like the first one. it was a lot funnier too like when how will was going to wait for jack but when he saw jack being chased by the man-eating tribes he was like nevermind. the only thing i didnt like was that ending! i mean how can disney leave us hanging. i know the movie was already 2 hrs but dang to end it like that. i was in such shock that i waited til the end of the credits for maybe a sneak preview of the third movie but all it was was the dog being worshipped by the crazy tribe. what a waste. anyways i cant wait to hear tonight speeches.

and to baggy up there. keep your head up..you'll get through it! haha

and to ro. heres some advice, next time you go to the movies..go sober =)

ps me and rocio changed our topic..its now whether or not you should live like pirates
