Speech 103--First Blog Posting

Hey team! Hope you have a great week! I look forward to discussing the film with you next week! For this blog, please relate something about your personal life (work, school or family) to any of the bolded terms from either chapter one or chapter two. Don't use a term that was already used by someone else, okay? For credit, follow the syllabus guidelines for a blog post, and don't forget your name and a connection to a classmate's posting, too!

Sandra,

One of the terms in Chapter 1 was "Internal Noise." I can't help but to think of my conversations with my children, and what must be a lot of "internal noise" interfering with them understanding my very informative lectures. For my oldest, she must be extremely worried and stressed over how many more songs will fit on her MP3 player. My oldest son's noise probably includes thoughts on better hiding places for notes from his teacher, and my baby is too busy thinking about how to better utilize his time in his crib, by removing his clothing and throwing his diaper across the room. So, if I have learned anything so far regarding public speaking or conversation, its this: If your audience isn't interested in what you have to say (especially concerning how to separate their laundry), they will not be able to hear a word that you say, over their "internal noise!"

Best Regards,
Darcie

After reading chapters 1 and 2, I am now more inform about public speaking than I was before. One of the term from chapter 1 that I could relate to my personal life is being a "receiver" rather than a speaker. I feel more comfortable being able to listen to other speak instead of me being the center of attention.

HI Sandra,
This class is already getting exciting.I was just laughing by myself a few minutes ago reading Darcie's comment on internal noise. It just sounded like my kids. A teacher once called me to say she thinks my son is always having seizure in class. I happen to be a nurse, so I asked her what happened. Guess what?He often thinks about his video games and TV shows that it interfers with his listening to the teacher.
Anyway, personally I think I relate most to "Elocution". This is partially due to my background. I come for a country where there is a popular saying that: women are suppose to be seen not heared, secondly that a true child of the parent is one that is able to distinguish between an ordinary look and a non verbal communication. My parents, grandparents and even fore fathers used elocution.I have consciously or unconsciously continued to use it with my own kids. But hei! folks avoid misinterpreting me.When Ilook sad sometimes,I am just tired from hurdling family, work and school.I'm cool.

Hi Sandra,

I don't really have much to conclude. A lot of the vocabulary that we are soon to be tested on sounds quite familiar, so I'm curious to what this class may have to offer. I just intend to become a better speaker because although I'm a chatterbox at times I tend to get shy in front of a crowd. I'm actually still in high school and have enrolled into this class to help out with presentations and competitions that I often participate in. =D.

Hi Sandra, Everyone have a story to tell, I'm a father of four loving kids and a husband of sweet and understanding wife. We're just a regular immigrant family who migrated here in this country for almost 20 years now. For me leaving here is always an honor. We just need to understand the meaning of democracy ,equality and of course freedom of religion. Only then we will understand and appreciate leaving here in U.S.. I'm happy to be in your class. J. Sandra,

After going over chapters one and two, I don't see myself as a speaker. I am more of a reserved person that talks when spoken to and has meaningful response to a question. It seems that my life is surrounded by a 'Central Idea'. I like to be short and deliberate with what I say because my details seem to get boring.

If I was to choose a term that relates to me the most is would have to be "External Noise" because of either I get destracted easily by other things than what I am doing or because I sometimes have trouble getting my point across because of other things on my mind.

One of the reasons why I decided to take this class was to be a better speaker through effective conmmunication skills. One who is able to stand in front of any audience and deliver a message that is understood. Chapters one and two explained that is attenable if a speaker has a clear goal and if the receiver/audience are placed at the center of the speech. THAT IS KNOWING WHO YOUR RECIEVERS ARE. I feel I can improve my communication skills if I know my audience and also what it is that I intend to achieve.

Handicaps. They are all around us. And you may not share my perspective, but given that none of us are equally skilled or have equal aptitude for all things, we all have them, to one degree or another. I have found some fascination and challenge in dealing with them. I'm no hero though, I don't know how I would deal with really big handicaps, no, just the little everyday ones will do. My handicap at the moment is that I was unable to get a hold of the class textbook this weekend. Alas, the bookstores were closed. Imagine, being unwilling to take my $78 ! (LOL) But, I did like the way the bookstore published the table of contents on their website, that was a nice surprise. The sample speech "Can You Read My Mind?" sounds intriguing. I do want to find out about the rich heritage of public speaking, though I was exposed to some ideas around that, it's been quite a long time since I've taken a history class. Ah the glories of adult education ! I'm really looking foward to managing apprehension more; though; I must confess, in my capacities as a teacher of children, and currently, as a sometimes trainer of adults, I think it is the apprehension that sometimes spices the mix. I think it was Martin Heidegger, the German Philosopher and monk, who said "Mere anxiety is the source of everything." (Sorry, no APA/MLA here yet). All hail public speaking apprehension !... or not, LOL Well, when I at last get a hold of a book (tomorrow, 2/5) I will have more to say. I enjoyed the comments on internal noise...hope this doesn't sound too "noisey!" LOL ---Paul DeLong
