blood diamond

What did you think of the film? What was the main point? Who was the real hero? Should consumers take responsibility for atrocities in underdeveloped nations? What does the film suggest about value, financial and personal?

The real hero? There is no one real hero, because without each other, the journalist, the diamond miner, and the mercenary turned humanitarian would not have been able to accomplish what they did without each other. The real hero is the human spirit they shared and each, in his own way allowed to say "yes" to, though, from each other's point of view each is faulted, and with a dubious agenda, they trust each other just enough for the miraculous to occur. Who is the real hero ? Trust, communication, jurisprudence that is not corrupt, the human desire, though often masked, for all beings to be safe, well, and cared for.

Yes, consumer should take responsibility for purchases that have social consequences; the demand created, creates the market, the market creates the human activity... and when a substance is deemed scarce, human greed is bound to create inequity and crime. Thus, we should consider our needs, and gravitate our expenditure to what is needed by the human community, and not just our whim or acquisitive ideal.

The film suggests that personal values aren't that personal; that our valuing of diamonds is based on an image that has no basis, considering the lack of honor and lack of beauty that surrounds the conditions under which they are acquired from the earth... as the film itself says, the earth is red...red from the blood of Africa's political and economic struggles, which, are based in large part from colonial and post-colonial explotation by the west. I heard just such a sentiment echoed on NPR just yesterday... images of Africa are promulgated by the West stereotypically, to prolong explotation of a continent whose people we do not hold in equal value to our own... and yet we hold the natural resources of that continent in the highest regard ! Personal values aren't just personal... in the global economy they are political and are often a product of cultural indoctrination as to what is valuable !!! Yes, we do need values to become MORE personal and see that the values we are fed by culture and media don't reflect our true values ! The film "Blood Diamonds" portrays this well. --- Paul DeLong

I think the movie 'Blood Diamond' is a great rendition of true life story. It is an awesome work of art with wonderful performers. The main point I believe is a portrayal of the illicit dealing in blood related diamonds that are smuggled out of a country forced into war by the intent to profit from their conflict diamond. The writer must have had Leonardo DiCaprio as the hero and Jennifer Connellly as the heroin. They are great actors but their portrayal of selfish intent betrayed their good acting. My hero in the movie is Solomon Vandy who stood out as a man who loved his family so much he will go an extra mile to save their lifes. I don't think consumers should take responsibility for atrocities in Underdeveloped nations. They can only show their sympathy and support by avoiding adding more insult to injury. This they can do by saying no to conflict diamonds.

I think Blood Diamond is a good movie that gets your attention from the begining to the end. Despite its voilent content, it massage was clearly passed to the audience. As for the hero in the movie, I may be forced to say Solomon Vandy who desperately wanted the best for his son and family was the hero. But like Paul, he needed the help of Leonardo DiCaprio to get to his son. Leonardo DiCaprio in the same way needed his help to get to the diamond. Both have their interests to fulfilled and have no choice but to stick together. I also believe that now that the atrocities commited over conflict diamond have been uncovered consumers should be resposible for whatever actions they take in purchasing and possessing of conflict diamonds. With everyone puting heads together future voilence and atrocities will be avoided.
