| " Sharing information with others to enhance their knowledge for and understanding about something" --Beebe and Beebe, p. 334). Using the same outline we have worked with all semester (see previous blog, under January of 2007), construct an informative speech about a theme, scene, character, issue and/or demonstration taken from the viewing of the film Blood Diamond in class (if you missed class, rent it and watch it OR research it on-line if you don't have time to view the entire film.) Review chapter 15 on informative speaking, and find at least one item of research to use for oral citations in your speech. Find a great example on page 350-351. Shoot for about a 5 minute speech, using at least one visual aid along with your verbal citation and 3 clear, interesting main points in the body of your speech (these points might be examples or steps in a process, depending on your topic choice). Email Sandra your topic selection asap for approval and to avoid more than one speech on the exact same topic. Be sure to clarify in your introduction the connection between your speech and the film Blood Diamond and avoid any long summaries of the film, we will all have seen it and need only a brief allusion to the scene or theme you choose to reference. Review chapter 13 on good speech delivery techniques and also review chapter 11 on outlining in order to achieve the strongest grade possible for this assignment. Memorize your attention getter and try not to look at your note cards until your first transition into the body of your speech! Turn in your final outline to me the night you make your speech. Early drafts are welcome by email for feedback and input from yours truly. BLOG ON! --Your Informative yet interesting instructor--Sandra |

Thanks Paul--Informative is my middle name. Well, not actually, but it should have been. Well, actuallly, I mean it is Patrice, but Informative would have been cute. Except for that my Mom got Patrice from a neighbor and I don't think we had any neighbors called Informative. Maybe we did, but I never met them. Oh well, I guess its for the best. Info would have been a cute nick name though.
Well, informative probably would be a good middle name if your career was in journalism or broadcast talk shows. However, a nick name like "inf" or "informer" might not be so good in other, more dubious, career fields. Let's see... the audience centered connection.. ah, yes, of course, perception of our person is often shaped by labels. In public speaking our verbal and non-verbal behavior labels us. Creating positive connections with the audience around labels we create for ourself increases the audiences identification with us, and then, also with the content of our speech. --- Paul DeLong

Well! I would like to make a comment on the Im-ASS situation that occurred. We discussed in class the freedom of speech and how important our ethics, beliefs and morals are when giving a speech. Im -ASS has given us a good example of someone who has none!
I think he is a good example of someone who can not adapt and change with the evolving of our country. He is stuck in the 1950's where whites honestly believed they were the superior race. It makes me sad because without change and adaptation we would not evolve and grow but die out.
I do believe he should have been punished but I also believe that his punishment should not have been being fired. I believe he should have been made to take participation in a class to hopefully educate him. While he has been this way for 37 years that we know of (fired before for racial comments), he has also been a help and a tool for other issues. We must remember the good he has done.
EDUCATE AND NOT HATE!

I'm competely unfamiliar with Mr. Imus, other than when channel surfing, I notice he wears a cowboy hat, and appears to be provocative and reactionary. I'm quite interested to know what good he has done. Can you fill me in Kelley ? Thanks !
