During our persuasive speeches, the guys went first and then the girls spoke on a different night...what did you notice about the differences in speaking styles or any other patterns that seemed to emerge...is there a difference in the way males and females conduct public speaking? Are gender differences like cultural differences? How do you attempt to appeal to a diverse audience in light of becoming aware of these differences? Be sure to indicate if you think the differences were verbal or non-verbal...remember, a good public speaker appeals to a diverse audience and is adaptable |

The thing that stands out the most for me are the non-verbal gestures the men and women used. i think the guys moved around a bit more moving their hands and were louder. Of course, their were some women who broke out and showed a more persuasive swagger. I think gesture usage from culture to culture is very different also. i think we tend to be more subdued here in the us, while in general out abroad people are more boisterous. I think you really have to be able to analyze your audience real quickly and learn to read them efficiently and effectively. Makes me want to become an orator..yeah right! LOL

Ding ding ding.......in the red corner we have the COMM301 Women...and in the blue corner, we have the COMM301 Men....let's get ready to RUMBLE!!!!! First off....I just wanna say that everyone ROCKED! We've all come so far in this short time span.
Honestly, I thought everyone, male and female had their own different speaking styles, nothing was really too gender specific that I could see. As for topic ranges were pretty general, everyone seemed to choose a topic that they were really comfortable with, without it being gender based. You could see that everyone was enthusiastic about what they chose to persuade us with.
Cultural differences seem to have a more distinct line, and if crossed can hold much greater concequence. But, gender specificity could also have concequential results, depending on the context.
The way I would appeal to diverse audiences would be to keep topics neutral. Verbal connotations would be kept to an absolute minimum, and non-verbal gestures would also be kept at a minimum. This is of course only up until the point that I would be confident that my audience analysis is dead on.

Before i began my analytic mode on the comparison between female and male speakers of last Tues, i really wanted to reinforce what Pat said, everyone did a excellent job with the numerous speeches conducted throughout the semester.Good job everyone for making it this far, pat yourself on your back.
Analytical mode sets in...in comparison between the genders, it appears that the men did indeed had more non-verbal gestures such as usage of hands, movement around room, and speaking at a good tone. For the females, a conservative approach of public speaking was observed by the lack of movements around room, hand-gestures were not prevalent, and inflection of words were minimum.
I also notice females had taken on more of the health aspect of the speech, when men had a more diverse set of speeches. The topics of interest conducted by each individuals can really define a person's and cultural interest. Ways of speaking properly to a diverse groups is to make the topic more abstract and generalizing certain ideas to encompass the audience. In addition, the speaker will need to understand and not assume every individuals are the same, therefore, this helps to minimize audience zone out of speeches if topics do not incorporate one's beliefs. Goodluck everyone and have a awesome summer.

I think during our persuasive speeches the guys used better gestures than the girls. I also
think the girls had more persuasive
speeches than the guys, however, the guys seemed to be with the audience and more aware of
what the audience wanted! Remember
everyone, especially in the future a excellent public speaker will try to make his, or her speech diverse and appealing to all audience! Good luck in the future and remember to smile, breath, and look up also during your creative speeches - in the future! Sincerely, Lori Maher!
The girls steped up during the persuasive speeches and beat the guy in my opinion, while the guys dominated the rest of the speeches. I guess it shows the natural ability of women to persuade over men. My wife can persuade me to clean up my mess with her eyes alone! As Christian said, the men were more explicit in their gestures. Their also seems to bring more arrogance to the floor, as the women bring more of a meekness.
The women were more interested in the food/health topics, as the guys focused on their hobbies (or themselves). The Women tried to improve the lives of others, while men tried to let people know how Awesome the Nentendo Wii was. In live guys have always thought more of themselves than others, and the women have been more motherly.
If we were to try to appeal to different cultures, we must keep it exciting, fun, and even surprising, (No one expects to get taged with Pepper Spray). Though we are a diverse group, we all talk on the cell phone while driving, we all are concerned with our eating habbits. Thogh we are diverse, we are all flesh and have the same strugles in life.

After two nights of our persuasive speeches, I learned the difference in speaking styles between male and female. Male and female are different characters. Therefore, they have different speaking styles.
Male used gestures and spoke loudly during speaking to persuade their audiences. Their speeches often talked about technology and game.
Female used their words and pictures to persuade their audiences. They talked more about health.
If you want to attract your audiences, your topic is adaptable to your audiences. After, you talk your speech, they get some information from your speech. That mean you have persuaded your audiences.
I like this class, I hope that everybody feel more confidence when you speak in public speaking. Have a good time in summer!!!!!!!!!!

There were obvious differences in speaking styles between the genders. It was evident that the men communicated to maintain independence, while the women spoke to maintain their role as nurturers. Consequently, this was reflected through the topics chosen. As mentioned, the men included more gestures which made them seem more uninhibited, while the women more reserved.
Gender differences are definitely like cultural differences. As men and women have differences in their interests (i.e. men often talk about sports, money, and business; women most often discuss people, feelings, and relationships), different cultures have different perspectives and context about certain topics. Therefore, I try to be mindful of the audience and adapt as necessary, in order to appeal to their listening needs.
Congratulations everyone for a job well done on all of your speeches.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!!!

Men are from Mars and women are from Venus. I don't think so. I believe that women and men were more similar than we all think. Except for the men being a little more animated and louder then some women i believe they were all pretty much the same.
The only differences i saw were different cultures use different gestures(some not as much as others) and that the women used more nutrition and health topics and the men were all over the place with their topics.
I would try to cover my topic in many ways if i were presenting it to a diverse audience. I would try to think of it from everyone's prospective and never say one is wrong or more correct than the others. I would assume that everyone is different and i can not pick one way to deliver my speech

I didn’t seem to notice too much gender differences in topics that were chosen. With few exceptions, most people had picked topics that did not persuade from societal acceptability. Therefore, the speaker remained in their comfort zone and so did the audience. The more observable difference was that the men seemed to use more movement and seemed more comfortable with being front and center. The women tended to stay off to the side and limit both gesture and movement. The gesture and movement limitation can be further broken down into cultural differences. It seemed certain cultures are more vocal and animated than others. So, in order to appeal to a diverse audience, it makes sense to know the audience in advance as much as possible, make no assumptions, and appeal to all with an ideology that can be related to by everyone and not just a select few.

Men and women have different style of speaking and that's for sure. Men push audience to believe what they say. Women explain the subject, step aside and let everybody to make the decision. Women are more delicate in word choice and that makes the speach more pleasuable. I would rather listen to men speach than women, because men are more straight forward. Means less time to spend for listening.

Everyone is different in their way when come to make or prepair for a speech. Compare to gender men and women. I see that women has less eye to eye contact with the audience while men were more persuasive with their speeches because their interconnect with the audience with their movement, gesture and eye to eye contact. Men's non verbal were more active than the women. Moreover, cultures is different from anyting compare to because different culture has different way of interping when we smile or even look into someones eyes is wrong. that's why cultures is so different compare to men and women comparision.
Thank you, Luan
As many people have mentioned, I have also noticed that in contrast to their female counterparts, males tend to use louder voices and seem to be a tad-bit more outgoing during their speeches. Though, it seems like the females focused more on content and built stronger arguments relative to the males.
I do believe that gender differences has correlation to cultural differences. With cultural differences, certain groups are often expected to have norms and expectations. As a result, people of these cultures often live up to these norms. Likewise, males and females often live up to the expected behaviors of their gender. THOUGH, this is NOT always the case, as people are often stereotyped incorrectly.
Trying to appeal to diverse audiences requires me to break out of the mold of a stereotyped male speaker. By building strong arguments while being able to hold confidence should allow me to persuade a wide array of audiences. Also, being considerate of different cultures will further build my credibility as a speaker and person.

After my speech i listened to most of the mens persuassive speech and the next day i listened to all the womens speak. I thought that the mens speech was more to the point and after listening to the womens speech some of it did sound persuassive. The men had some strong topics and facts and figures to support their speech.
All the speechs were great and this show how th men and the women have diffrent ways of persuading people.

A very obvious difference between female and male is the intonation. Female tend to be more perceptual while male's tone is stronger. Male use more movement to attract the audience.
I feel like more jokes from male but more personal opinions from female.
All these are verey important to public speaking. Both female and male have own ability to trap attention and persuade audience.

Unfortunately I missed the guys persuasive speeches so I am basing my comments on the speeches I was witness to. I think that the men moved around more and were even willing to act "a fool" to get a reaction from their audience. I think this made for more interesting speeches. I know sitting there for 3 hours listening to people talk wasn't incredibly exciting but the energetic speakers woke me back up...not that I was sleeping, but just having a harder time focusing. I think us girls gave good factual info and spoke well. I think maybe we spoke a little softer and with less enthusiasm but the points came across.

As far as differences in speaking style go between men and women, I noticed that most men in the class used non-verbal kind of attention-getter like tumbling down or just demonstration of something, women on the other hand used verbal attention-getter such as a quotation, phrase, or statement. Men were more vocal in delivering their speech compared to women.
I believe that gender and cultural differences are not alike. Gender differences among cultures might have some similarities. It is very important to consider cultural differences and adapt as required when speaking in front of diverse audience in order to appeal to everyone without alienating some.

Within the two nights of the speech, I figured out that different gender presented with different styles. Besides gender, there is also cultural difference in the speeches.
For males, their tone are lower than females, and they tend to have lots of movement during the speech. Combines with the speeches, they liked to tell jokes. They showed more gestures and some of the visual aid are pretty nice.
For female, they liked to tell opinions but they showed less gestures. They used visual aids such as picture to persuade the audiences.
Both male and female show important styles in public speaking. And both gender have their own styles to present the topics. Each speaker tends to choose familiar and comfortable topics.

i think there's little difference between the male and female presentation just because of biological differences.women tend to be more wordy and men are more straightforward but everyone did a very good job on their presentations.women tend to focus more on health issues while men focused more on common, practical things.both were good however.the gestures were the most powerful tool used in these speeches, no matter what the ethnicity or racial diversity we have in our class.i enjoyed the speeches, and analyzing them makes me learn from other people, to be a more effective speaker and listener.
good job everyone!!!i will surely miss this class!...*sigh*
-karen asuro
I felt everyone did a very good job. I thought it was some what funny though the topics people chose. The girls seem to have topics mostly on good health, diet or cooking. When the guys gave a lot of topics on their person self, things they do. Besides that the speeches were well given in regaurds to context, organization and delivery. I think many people in the class found this speech to be one of the easier ones that or they were simply more comfiable now after giving all the other speeches.
In regaurds to giving speeches to a varity of people I would say the best thing to do is keep it positive. What I mean by that is do not bash on any paticular groups or beliefs they may have. Since it is almost impossible to read what people believe things are better kept open minded and positive. I feel that is some what easy to do unless some people are trully against another which is their own issue they would have to work on.

What I noticed was that the males favored using the overhead. The females tended to read more from their manuscript than the males. Some of the ladies were more passionate towards their ideal whereas the dudes seemed at times dull, non verbal differences. Both genders effectively persuaded the class. As for me, I have a difficult time altering my tone or attitude with a different culture. But for obvious changes, like speaking to adults verses children, I will usually joke more with kids and talk in a different manner. But when it comes to culural changes, my jokes are usually lame and I end up telling myself, "Wow, you had a tough crowd!" But in reality I didn't adapt to their enviroment, and it was me not them that was tough!

Ofcourse, I noticed a difference in the speaking styles between the men and the women but not that much. I think the men are more vocal in terms of volume and intonation. They seem to be aggressive in speaking up their speeches. Well, aggressiveness is always a trait of a man and hormones just explain it why. For women, most are softspoken but there are a few that showed some aggresiveness in them. In terms of topics, I think women talked more about issues regarding concern for mankind like health and nature.
Overall, the speeches were really great and one similarity that I noticed was that everyone persuaded in an ethical way and made sure no one was offended by their speeches.

as for me, i thought it made no difference. it was just as it was, the whole class giving speeches about different topics. or did i miss something? but what i did noticed was that it felt real good having a whole day of just listening to classmate's speeches w/o having to worry that you're going to have to make a speech on that particular day.
last and foremost, the class as a whole did great, but i'm still very iffy about myself. bleh!
HER
first thing i notice is most of the girls had their speech on the topic of health, heart disease, lung cancer, healthy eating... while there is no trend on the topics of men's speech, religion, cars, technology, safety issues...
about the difference in ways of persuasion, i agree with ppl here that mentioned, woman spent most of their speech on explaining the idea, giving lots of information, while man gave lots of their own opinion and thoughts.
but i think we all did well, compare to the beginning of the semester, all the ppl had improved.

I wasn't in class the day the guys gave their
persuasive speeches, but based off what I saw during
the rest of the summer, I would say that a few of the
guys are more high energy than the ladies in the
class. The girls tend to deliver their speeches in a
more calm manor for the most part.
As far as gender differences being like cultural
differences, I think the two are similar in the sense
that the proper amount of consideration definately has
to be taken for both. For instance, one probably
wouldn't want to do a persuasive speech on the
benefits of wearing a jock strap in a classroom
containing both guys and girls. You would lose half of
your audience after the intro.
If I ever take another speech class I would try to be
more dynamic to hold my listener's attention. I might
also figure out how to use power point because both
the guys and girls in the class put together some
attractive presentations with that program.
-Maureen Crowley
uhmm during the persuasive speech i think it was the girls who rock! however, the boys did persuade better topics than girls. and i think boys were actually did a great presentation because they used a lot of gestures and volume. In the other hand, girls' topics were were actually very helpful in our daily lives because most of them talked about health issues.
all in all.. i think everyone did a great job in their presentation. and i just wanna say that i was very scared using GAY MARRIAGE as my topic. lol
-robert hernandez
The one major difference that i noticed between the guys and the gurls is the topics they picked...the ladies tended to go with more health related issues whereas a lot of the boys stuck with technology or sports related topics. Also, more of the guys spoke louder and used gestures than some of the girls. All in all the ladies and the fellas did an amazing job persuading me to play pingpong and to buckle my seat belt.
Reyna
To be really hones there wasnt really much of difference that I noticed between the men and the women. but I would have to say that if there were a difference between them, I think the men used more gestures then what the women did and I think that the women were better with speaking.
