Group speeches should include:
Individual times of 2-3 minutes
All outline details
A copy of group outline (same for all members) from each speaker, including individual highlights/directions/details on his or her copy ONLY. Speech is worth 100 points, as always I'll grade on content, organization and delivery of each speaker--grades are not given by group, but awarded to individuals--typical speech breakdown should include: 4 or 5 members, one speaker takes the intro, 1 takes main point one, 1 takes main point two and one speaker concludes, all using equal time and information. Review group speaking in your textbook for help and feel free to email me. Below, post for this week's blog

1.) One good question about this speech and/or anything you've read for class so far.
2.) One funny example of working in a group (either real life or movie/tv)

5-7 lines total please!
Thanks!
Sandra

1. So for the main points can there be more than 2?

2. In my biology class when I was in highschool, we had to disect a frog and when me and my group started to disect it, I was in charge of taking out the eyes and i started playing with them acting like they were my eyes lol i know its gross but it was pretty funny at the time.

Hey everyone!

1. For the attention grabber, is it okay to share a short story?

2. During my senior year in my english class, we were revising our essays in groups. It was quiet since everyone were reading silently to themselves. All of a sudden, a guy in my group farted! He was embarrassed and we all started to laugh. It wasn't too bad because he was my friend and it wasn't the first time. Ha-Ha!

Hellooo

1. Does political subjects fall under the -what not to talk about- category under ethics?? Like for example, Gun rights, Gay rights, etc.

2. I can't remember any funny group experiences!! But.. like Jacquelyne, i remember in my high school science class, i was working with a partner on a owl pellet project which kinda freaked my partner out, so i ended up having to do most of the digging for rat bones in all the furs!! I think some of the fur hairs landed on my shirt too.. lol.

1. I have a real hard time listening. I tend to think of things that I have to get done i.e., grocery shopping, picking up my son from school, dinner, etc. Do you have any additional tips for becoming a better listener?

2. During a meeting at work, I was elected to represent a group of my coworkers. I was to inform our bosses how conscientious our group of employees were; always getting their work done, getting to work on time, never complaining. Instead of using the word conscientious, I used the word conscious. Got a big laugh, but it was pretty embarrassing.

Hi-- 3 or 4 main points is the max, but 2 really good ones is great for beginners--a short story to grab attention is fine--a rhetorical question or song lyric quote is also effective, humor is as well--Politics is fine as a topic, but you don't want to be too opinionated or narrow in your approach--analyze your audience and show nsensitivity to a wide range of thinking--Hope this helps! Smiles--Sandra

Hi, group things i have done is put together boxes or baskets of things for people in need here and abroad.we had fun doing it. were tired so we act silly. I like to read your blogs, some are funny, some informative. Margaret

1. For the introduction, can we combine the "attention grabber" and "audience connection" into one?

2. I had lots of fun doing group work in chemistry lab. Once we were doing the qualitative analysis lab and my group fell behind. So in a hurry we carelessly took the test tubes with ammonia out of the hood to centrifuge. Since ammonia is toxic the whole class had to evacuate.

1) I find the anxiety assessment is very helpful. It lets me know where I am at with anxiety. The assessment helps me point out where I am most nervous.

2) In high school my group and I had to do a skit for our class participation. One of our partner did not show up, so we had to do the skit without him. It was really weird because I had to talk to thin air since he was my husband in the skit.

Hello!!
1. I guess i am just wondering if it can be ok to use a few more main points then 4 if they are pretty basic, they are nothing too indepth. And just to clarify every person in the group has to speak for 2 mins right?
2. I cant really think of a funny instance that happened during a group project, but i remember when i was in highschool for group assignments we would sometimes get to make videos. This was always fun, but the best part was creating a "bloopers" or a series of clips where we messed up during filming. We would add it on to the end of the video project and after showing it to the class we would watch the "bloopers" in class. It was always really funny to watch but somewhat imbarassing too. :D

hello!
In my biology class last semester we had to disect a rat. For some of us, it was okay, but one of my classmate in my group was pregnant. She couldn't participate in the disection because it was a hazard. My group was one of the smallest one. I think this is funny in a awkward way because it was new to me.

1. Is it alright to use a quote for the "Attention Grabber?" The quote I found really fits well with our group topic, but it might not be that "attention-grabbing" to everyone. Hopefully it will work out tho... =)
2. In elementary a group of my classmates and I did "Chicken Little." I was Ducky Lucky, and I don't remember much but that I had a great time playing. That was a good "group experience."

Hi, I'm still trying to figure out how to put a speech together. This group speech will help. I have trouble putting an outline together. Margaret

1. Do you take points off for going over / under time on our speeches?

2. A previous position I held I would travel with a team of 5. And one day we were flying back to Sacramento and we met a "palm reader". She read all of our palms and she told me within 1 year I would get a large sum of money. Well that was about 7 yrs. ago and I am still waiting. =)

1) What can I do to help myself listen better if the speaker is just simply boring? (Previous professor, lol)

2) Just a few weeks ago in my Chemistry class, we mixed many solutions together to get a reaction. Everyone in the lab was in pairs. So one of the solutions that we had to mix had sulfide. And anything mixed with sulfide will get a reaction of a ROTTEN EGG SMELL. Just imagine this smell forming at least 26 times throughout the lab! It was gross but also funny because everyone was trying to get away from the groups that were forming it, LOL.

1) While talking about some of the main points, is it okay to talk about how to cheat the system even if its not legal?
2)In my physiology class in high school we had to dissect a baby pig and my partner and I would make incisions that we werent suppose to just to see how other parts of the pig looked like. Kinda gross but yet interesting!

1. Dose each person need their own attention grabber?

2. working in a group? Well this might come as a shock but I really don't have a funny story about that...huh weird....

1. I have take notes when someone speaking, but I cannot hear the speaking when I write, what can I do to improve my listening?

2. During my Arch332 class, this is the class for group project. One of my member and the other one always talking the different topics or repeat and repeat the same questions a few times. It slow down our process but I don't know how to do, because it is the first time of doing the group project. At last our project didn't do prefect but we know that our communication a little bit wrong and we try to fix it for the next project.

1.) What are some good ways to end a speech memorably?

2.) Like Jacqueline and Mary, I remember doing many group projects in my high school science classes. One time we were making ice cream and my group member got so excited about having made this dandy little creation to the point he accidentally dropped the baggy with the ice cream in it and his expression was priceless when he saw it melt on the floor.

1. What makes a good attention grabber?

2. I was in a study group at Starbucks studying for our final exam for biology. Well, we went at it for couple of hours. One of the group mates decides to get something to drink. well, as she was waiting, she decided to sit down to talk to us. well, she missed the chair and went straight to the floor. everyone looked at her shocked and started laughing. She was embarrassed and made a great excuse to leave like about 15 minutes later. Like Lisa's and Joann's comment, it was an embarrassing moment.

1. Do you expect awesome transitions even though it's a group speech?

2. NEVER LISTEN TO LOUD MUSIC ON YOUR HEADPHONES WHILE DOING A GROUP PROJECT. Doin a project in my American Studies class, we began to split up to do what we needed to do. My friend had her ipod on really loud and she forgot that only she could hear the loud music (thought the whole group was listening i guess). Long story short she farted and the whole class heard. She kept doing her work as if nothing happened. True story. =P

[1] Does the citations for visual aid have to be included in the outline?

[2] Two years ago, it was my brother's wedding reception party and I was supposed to do the toast/cakecutting ceremony. Everything was going fine but when I was congratulating my brother and his wife, I completly forgot his wifes name.

1. Are the introduction and the conclusion very important parts of the speech?
2. I remembered when I was in high school in Vietnam. I and my classmates did the chemistry lab. Suddenly, we heard the strange sound coming from the table behind us. This curious friend unattendedly opened a wrong chemical bottle which was the "sleeping elixir". He felt down his chair and started snoring. All of my friends were laughing and they tried to wake him up. He didn't know that he was drawn a funny cartoon picture on his forehead.

cali- your group story is hilarious!! i am dying laughing right now!

1. If we are only introducing the main topics in the intro how do we use credibility?

2. I don't think i have an interesting group story, although i did used to watch a lot of real world/ road rules challenge and it was always interesting seeing how the different personalities reacted around eachother. haha!

Oh I feel bad, I should have answered more of these sooner--I will go over them in class tomorrow too--attention getters are very importaant in the introduction, so not every speaker needs tomake one, just the intro person-- a quote or a series of thoughtful questions or a good anecdote (sory with a moral) or even a great song lyric make great attention getters! Credibility can be conveyed individually or for the whole group by a statement that clarifies why you are experts on your topic--like, "we are all cat doctors" or "we all are broke" or "we did alot of research together"--see? Also, everyone speaks for around 2 minutes during the group speech and I do penalize for goind more that a minute over--I hope this response is helpful--SMILES--SANDRA

1)Is the teacher going to collect the written part of the speech or is she going to grade us on just the speech?

2)make one guy do all the work while the rest can relax and just really be on call just in case he really need help. for example coffee runs and snacks or if he ran out of ink in printer. Yeah its funny because you know you find a partner that always wants to do every thing his way and he just wants to work alown, but your friends so hes becomes your partner anyways.
