Fourth Blog Post: Coms 321, 331 and 301

Great input on the Phillipine Disaster. We do have an exciting CRC campus opportuinty to participate in Earth Day as a way to raise money for The Red Cross, the charity most of you mentioned as preferred. It would be in April and we could connect to the event by raising awareness of safety and natural disater preparedness and governemnt responsibility in the Quad with posters and music, etc. Day and time TBA, if you can't come you can help in other ways to prepare! We could also highlight the uniqueness of Phillipino culture and how special the lives that we lost were to the world. The three classes can do this together, but we need an easy, uncomplicated way to raise money, so I like to stick with just collecting change: gET IT: Change makes CHANGE! Every little bit helps and even though we don't have a lot of extra, we can make a difference, so bring in your spare change for classes throughout March and let me know if you have a good idea for a symbolic gift we could offer to others who donate their change to us at Earth Day (really cheap and'or free, connected to Phillipino Culture) Also tell me how our combined fundraising effort applies to at least one concept from our text book in this blog, underline the term you have slected and identify the chapter and book it is from!

Since I'm working on my part of the group project, the tearm that comes to mind is (Analogies). By comeparing the dramatic event that took place to Earthday; people can see how nathure can and do change and effect everyone. More pepole can relate and donate to the cuse because this can happen to anyone at any time and there is no real way to stop it from ocuring.

After reviewing the blog post regarding the Phillipine disaster, my mind is prosing over the many other disasters to which the world responds. It seems there is an obligatory current these days to "help others." This is a good peer pressure!!

The word from our book that comes to mind is "Empathy" (Chapter 3; Page 87). Empathy is the ability to relate -- even feel -- with another person, to feel what the other person is feeling like in the situation. Often times in crisis, our compassion is prompted by this empathy.

A symbolic gesture could be anything from a bracelet to getting the Red Cross to donate Red Cross stickers and affixing them to something that specifies the Phillipino disaster.

Based on my response to the blog previous to this, I have spoken with Fr. Bernard Tape of St. Charles Borromeo Parish Church at Center Parkway. He asked me to call the Phil. Consulate in SanFrancisco instead. I did and was told to check www.heartbridgeintl.com for info on the Leyte, Philippines landslide. When you have time, please check it out too. "Heartbridge" is a literal English translation of "hearts" "bridging" or making connections to help disaster victims. Toll free # is 888-470-give. Cash donations is welcome - and I think that is the most practical right now. Also, it jives with what Sandra has conceptualized "Change for change." Any amount is welcome and tax deductible based on No. 68-0598219 under IRS 501C.
I think of mindful listening as the concept when people help others. We are exposed to a lot of technology/media noise everyday and we choose to pay attention to the disaster thousands of miles away. We are mindful of people's lives and welfare. Our minds are focused/present on that event at this very moment. I also agree with what Steve said "empathy." One is asking when is the start of the fund raising - this is midway in March. Btw, the goal of heartbridge is to raise $100,000 - and they have received $28,873 and have $40,000 in pledges. I don't care how small the amount we can collect would be but I think that would make a lot of difference to the lives of the people back home.
