Getting ready for the big midterm in a few short weeks, it's time to have that outline format memorized and be practicing gestures, slow, easy speech styles and loud, confident tone of voice! R U ready?
To practice, I'd like you to blog one after the other, each person giving the next one an impromptu "compare or contrast" style topic which you have to type a quick conclusion for. Such as: Hybrids versus SUV's. So, I'll go first and the next blogger has to take my topic and turn it into a complete conclusion (summary of imaginary 3 main points, thesis, conclusive language and a memorable ending or "grand finale" statement.) In addition to your conclusion, tell us how you think you have improved so far in puiblic speaking at the nearly half-way mark! Finally, leave a topic for the next blogger and you're done!

As I get ready to wrap this up, let me remind you that hybrids are better than SUV's because they get more miles to the gallon, look less "dorky" and are easier to cram into small parking spaces when runing late for speech class. Now that I've reviewed my main points, let me close with this dramatic visual aid proving SUV's leave a huge carbon footprint. Remember, when it comes to gas usage: Less is MORE!

Why is it that schools believe that uniforms make it easier for studens? Well I can tell you off the back I have three kids and one of them just left middle school that required uniforms and I have another child in the 2nd grade that has to wear uniforms. My youngest is not required yet because he is in preschool, but will soon when he gets into kindergarden. So let me tell you why it is a bad idea for students to wear uniforms. The kids do not get to show the own expression in clothing, white shirts get dirty and most important the uniforms can get costly.
The schools thinks that the idea of wearing uniforms help parents and students so that the child doesn't have such a hard time finding clothes for the next day. This is not true becuase I sometimes have to encourage my daughter to wear something that I pulled out for her the next day and it might not go well. Do they really think that kids these days want to wear such a boring uniform that does not let them show who they are through their own fashion. The white shirts that my daughter wears get very dirty and often are stained. That means that shirt goes into the garbage. It does not matter how many times you wash it with bleach the stain is there forever. This gets to be hard on parents when they have to buy cloths just for their kids to go to school in and regular cloths for everyday wear. Who can really afford to buy two sets of clothing for their children? I know as for me it is putting a dent in my wallet. I can't wait to move into a school district that does not require uniforms.

So there you have it. School uniforms save time because you don't have to wonder what to wear that day, they cost less than a zillion different wardrobes, and they make the jocks and cheerleaders look like everybody else. School uniforms do have their advantages. As you can see from the overhead, Betty looks just like Veronica, and Reggie looks just like Archie and Jughead. Save time, save money, save face-- especially if you're one of those students forced to shop at K-mart, like me!
The fact that I've come to recognize some of my shortcomings -- like my tendency to be too detailed and to repeat myself-- will help me improve as a public speaker.

So, as you think about your upcoming week and the meals that you will be providing for your family, I strongly encourage you to consider a homecooked meal. Remember, homecooked meals are more cost effective and provide lunches for the next day, they are more nutritious because you have greater control over the ingredients you use, and foster good family interaction and the development of important skills that will be helpful for your children down the line. The effort is worth it- your wallet, wastline, and family will thank you!! And with this, I wish you all Bon Appetit!
At this halfway point, I am much more aware of the importance of the introduction and conclusion as important places to highlight and reiterate main points. Prior to this class, I'm not sure that I would have structured my speeches in this way. Also, I'm more aware of my use of "um". Something to work on!

I conclude that fast food is the BEST way to go when eating. Today I have covered three marvelous examples of why, including how ecoli virus in burgers actually helps with studying for Sandra's class, how fries are proven to strengthen bones and muscles and finally, Jared the sub guy from tv would never be where he is today were it not for fast food! And that's why school exit exams can be good. They force the school to do their very best to educate every student, students have to learn at least the basics if they expect to graduate, and the exams reduce the need for remedial education at the college level. School exit exams can improve a student's chances for success in an increasingly competitive world. In closing, if you want a shot at being the next Bill Gates, passing a high school exit exam is a good place to start!

So sorry Charles I kind of wonder what happen to your response to my impromptu. Oh well you seem to got it.
To end the night I would like to remind all of you how important home cooked meals are for your family vs. fast food. They have better nutrition and helps your family stay healthy, while fast food makes your body tired and sometimes it makes you feel sick. The food you used for home cooked meals is more fresh and hasn’t been sitting in a huge freezer for days. And, the most important having a home cooked meal will give you the opportunity to spend time with your family not just unwrapped a hamburger gobble it up and get on with your day.
I feel that every time I done a speech I realized things that I could improve on. My last speech I felt that I was moving my hands but I kept them very low. I try to pause while I was speaking, because it was something I didn’t do in my fist speech. And I’m becoming aware of the things I do while I’m speaking in public.

Conclusion:
As most "bastard" children know, it may be in their best interest not to know who they came from. Although we covered some of the particular scenarios earlier, there will always be the question of, " who am I?". The simplist answer is the questionaire, upon donation of sperm, that the father would like you to know. If they decline to state, then why would you want to know a father that doesn't want to know you? Be proud of who you are as an individual. You don't need to know if your father likes pickles to get on with your life. Appreciate what you have, life.

Now that we have seen all of the scientific evidences the answer is clear. Hockey moms have consistently preformed better than Average Joes. Not only do they have a higher personal income, but they have a higher level of happiness, and a more stable molecular composition. Now that we've seen the scientific evidence remembers that there is nothing average about a hockey mom!

Cedar vs. Maple

Now to wrap up this discussion on wood. Lets review the point as to whether cedar is better than maple. Both help the environment and we get many resources from both. Although the Maple is used more in food products and some detailed furniture, Cedar is used in many other more usual fashions. The cedar has a quicker growth rate so the full tree can be used sooner, but the maple doesn't have to be cut down to be used. The answer is that they are both great trees. So just remember the next time you go looking for a good piece of wood to use for you dinner to grab both, a cedar plank to cook on and maple syrup to flavor the food with.
I don't know if I have actually improved that much as a speaker since the beginning of this semester. But, I can say that I have enjoyed the experiences in the different topics that were to be covered, it has definitely stretched my views to be able to speak on many topics easily.

Maple if the better choice over cedar when chosing wood for furniture, cabinets, or flooring. Maple has a harder and more durable texture which makes it better suited for carpentry. Maple provides a deeper hue and better coloring that enhances the look of furniture. Most guitars, drums, and bassons are made of maple, proving maple is a flexible and durable wood.
Cedar is difficult to work with, which is why its use is limited to cedar chests and roof shingles. Cedar shingles are currently discouraged in home building due to warping and inability to resist fire. Cedar's pleasant smell and resiliency to dampness and pests is cedar's only advantage when building furniture and storage chests. Unfortunately, Cedar forests are in serious decline in Washington State and British Columbia. So choose maple and help save the dedar forests!

Oops...sorry Amanda...I will answer yours! Hybrid vehicles are a better solution compared with developing alternative fuels. Current technology is limiting alternative fuels to biodiesel products that come from corn and other valuable food crops. The developing word needs these crops to feed the hungry. Severe food shortages in Asia and Africa are a direct result of diverting food for consumption for food for fuel. Drivers in the developed world should stop driving their Lincoln Navigators and switch to a Honda Civic Hybrid. Keep the food for the hungry!

We are all woried about gas prices and other ways of transportation, and this electric train though cost a bundle will help in the long run. Yes we are going through a economic down fall right now, however the markerts of done this before and have recoverd from it, so I do not think that this railroad will help or hurt the problem in the end it will save us, because more people will drive less, and take the trains, saving every one money, and soon they will use that extra money to stimulate the economy. More people will go on vactions and travel bringing the economy up every were, they will be spending less on gas and more on food, and things they want.
To end I would like to say that yes it will cost a lot but I think it should be done cause the out comes are only positve. People having more money to stimulate the drowning economy, and less cars on the road, helping the earth, so I think it should be done to benifet us all.

With all of the reason presented above, we as humans should have the ability to make our own decision as to what we put into our bodies. Fast food industries focus on implying that our rights are infridged upon in efforts to veer our attention away from the high caloried labels while our government focuses on the label in efforts to ban it. At the end of the day, government should have the responsibility of providing the health content of fast foods but we as citizens take the responsibiltie of choosing whether we want to consume or not to consume. As one would say, government should govern and not dictate!

Let me end by say that Big Brother’s plan to ban plastics is just another example of the man keeping us down. Plastics play a large part in our society. Plastics provide us with a means to carry our groceries, they contain many of our consumables, and most importantly plastics are the vehicle we use to transport pet excrement. My points illustrate that plastics will remain a big part of our way of life. They are what keeps us organized, and they are what separate us from the crap some of us have to deal with on a daily basis.

In conclusion, lets not forget how environmentally friendly the bike is, how riding can benefit your health, and how much money you can save while other people that drive gas guzzlers drop money on gas! And so I conclude that the benefits of having a bike outweigh the benefits of having a car! Isn't it time for you to get on your bike and reap the benefits!
I have improved on everything! I think that the impromptu practice speech really opened my eyes to public speaking. It really showed what I learned and what I could improve on. Having the outline memorized does wonders and I hope that it will let me do good on the midterm! I think the biggest thing I've improved on is performing. Before I took this class, I mostly thought that speech would just be my essay read out loud! WRONG...the attention getters, the connection with the audience, credibility...etc...It all makes sense now!

In closing, let me remind you why I feel that ocean fishing is better than farm fishing.
First, the ocean raised fish has a higher nutritional value because they are eating what is in their natural habitat rather than being fed artificial substances.
Secondly, they taste and look better.
Third, the ocean raised fish are not pumped full of antibiotics or hormones that could be transferred to us when we eat them.
Here is a picture of two Salmon recently caught. One is an Ocean raised fish and the other is a Farm raised fish. Can you tell the difference?
So next time your at the grocery store take a minute to consider the advantages to buying the ocean raised fish.

This semester has been very beneficial to me thus far. I put this class off until the very LAST possible moment, because I was dreading it! I have not only found myself having fun in this class, but I actually enjoy it. I have learned how to structure a speech properly, how to carry myself (body language, visual aids, etc. ) I have also learned to "breath" when I am speaking so that I stay calmer and don't run out of breath. I think this class is structured very well, and has really helped a lot of us come out of our shells.
Oh jeeze. Why do I have to get the controversial one... hope I don't offend anybody.
It has been a very long time indeed since the Pledge of Allegiance was first written. Here's a copy I found on the internet, notice the date. The same ideals do not seem to apply anymore to the average student. Many of them do not embrace God as their savior, others do not believe at all. In many schools, the Pledge of Allegiance is required for students to recite each morning which would go against those students' beliefs. I suggest this change, "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, all united, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." It sounds a little weird because it is different but that way all students can be patriotic without pledging to a certain religion as well.
I definitely sound less robotic in my speeches now. Before it was like Data from Star Trek or something. I used to have the same deer-in-the-headlights look as well, but I've gotten over that haha.

In conclusion to buses verses trains I believe for starters the train will get one to there destination faster than a bus can only because the bus has to make several stops before it gets to the destination. Even though bus stops are in front of some people's homes it's quicker for them. The only downfall with the lightrail is that it doesn't stop exactly at the destination that one needs to be at.
My experience in this class has been great and I've lurned a lot and hopefully I can become successful out of this class. I believe that I'm a natural and just need to work on my detailing and timing.

To Vote or not to vote: Is that really the question? Voting is the foundation for our entire system of government. The colonists came to the new world to escape government tyrany and to establish a government of the people, for the people and by the people. Voting is our civic duty. Voting is how we hold our representitives accountable. Finally, voting is our way of connecting with thoses that create the policy that runs our country. Voting lets the people in power know how we think, feel, and wish to be governed. If we don't vote, the political system crumbles. The minority get to choose for the majority, and we loose our voice. Don't loose your voice, be heard, and send a powerful message to those in power. If they don't legislate to the will of their constituants, they will get voted out.

In conclusion, I will summarize the comparison of both flat panel TVs. According to HDTV World's David Katzmaier review, Plasmas has a very good home theater image quality, wide viewing angle and superior motion resolution but less energy efficient than LCDs, has a slight potential for burn in, and sometimes lower native resolution. While LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) are available in a range of sizes, matte screens generally reflects less light, and has no danger of burn in but home theater image quality generally not as good as Plasma, and has relatively narrow viewing angle.
No matter what your choice is, Plasma or LCD, Watch tv responsibly. Don't be a couch potato! Get out of the house and get more involved on outdoor activities. Walk your dog, play basketball in the park, or ride a bike. It's better for your health!
I've learned a lot about giving a speech. The outline definitely helped me organize any given topic and deliver more effectively. It helped built my confidence.

I know this is late, but I totally forgot when i got home last night that I had to do this.... But here it is!
So, in conclusion, I strongly believe that senior care should be provided in the home. Nursing homes are not clean, the workers are uncaring, and these homes harbor depression and anxiety for the individual and family. I hated the retched smell of my grandmothers nursing home, and the cries of my mother when she realized that she was not being taken care of properly. So by all means, regardless of the cost, please take home care in to great consideration.
I think that I am doing better in the class. I still get supper nervous. And I have to shake it off right before I start. But to be honest its like something in me takes over. It just comes out. At least in the speech last night. I don't know if my nerves take over or I just get eratic. And BAM!!! I do feel more confident though, and I believe that has aided in my ability to just be myself when I get up there. I just hope I can keep on improving!!!!

So as for school uniforms, i think they are a great idea because they save your money, you dont need to worry about what your going to wear to school, and kids cant make fun of you, since they are wearing the same style. More schools should switch to uniforms instead of regular clothes because its easier, cheaper and no more groupy style clothes.

In conclusion, I would like to remind everyone of the evil that is high fructose corn syrup. Since its introduction into the American Food Supply in the 1970s, this nation has seen incredibly widespread levels of obesity. The people of this country are also experiencing one of the shortest life expectancy of any of the industrialized nations. High fructose corn syrup is extremely unhealthy. The answer is not pretty, but it is evident-we must boycott those companies that want to cut our lives short with poisoned food.

Wrapping my speech up I will say again that UFC is a real sport unlike Professional Wrestling because the blood, injuries, and people are all real. Professional Wrestling can be entertaining but when it comes down to it, real fighting is always more exciting to watch.
So far the class has been going well. I believe I do need to work on the flow of my speeches as well as gestures and looking around the audience instead of focusing on one particular side. Hopefully I can improve this in the following speeches
